Exploration and Economic Expansion

The pacification of the Iroquois and the necessity for rebuilding the network of fur-trade treaties contributed to the explorations in the Great Lakes and Mississippi regions. These explorations were led by important people such as Louis Jolliet, Francois Dollier de Casson, Jacques Marquette, and the Cavelier de La Salle.

Notwithstanding, the Iroquois Wars had begun again in 1682, which highlighted the need for the involvement of new heroes, such as Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville. Economic factors associated with missionary and military activity outlined the need for furs to be purchased from Aboriginal peoples.

Taking advantage of the partly favorable circumstances, Jean Talbot initiated a dynamic development program. Apart from managing the agriculture and fur trade, Talon commenced ventures such as trade with the West Indies, shipbuilding, fishing industries, commercial crops like hemp and flax, and he also constructed a brewery. Still, in 1672, the economic circumstances had altered dramatically, and nothing remained of these beneficial initiatives.

It could be challenging to pinpoint the fundamental elements of this commencing society. Still, in the case of Acadia, the most important features were the significance of fishing, the quality of the agricultural establishments and the alternating French and British regimes. As for St. Lawrence Valley, farmers were clearing the land. In the meantime, artisans didn’t enjoy the support of big enterprises. Fur traders were coping with unfortunate economic situations and burdensome regulations, although they facilitated the colony’s exports.
